Holy Spirit Catholic School implements a comprehensive school counseling program that promotes and enhances student achievement. The school counselor is available to help students, parents, teachers, and administration develop positive learning experiences for students using a holistic approach in their development – personal / emotional and social, spiritual, academic and educational, and career and occupational.
The Holy Spirit Counseling program provides all students with education, prevention, intervention and remdediateion services throughout the school year giving students a strong foundation for future success. The counselor works with parents and teachers alike in order to meet the demands and challenges facing today’s students.

Components of a Comprehensive and Developmental School
Counseling and Guidance
The fundamental mission of the Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of San Antonio is to proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ. His news is one of challenge, love and unity. His spirit is caught in the lives of students. That Good News announces that every person is uniquely created by a loving God who sent Jesus to show how much that same God loves each person.
Therefore, each person is lovable and worthy of love and affection. All people, as they grow and mature in love, need help realizing their full potential as children of God. The Archdiocese of San Antonio Guidance Curriculum Guide is one attempt to assist children grow in maturity in their relationship with God, with self, with others and with all of creation. It is designed for total school program integration.
The Texas Catholic Conference Education Department (TCCED) requires that all Catholic Schools has a systematic guidance program throughout all grade levels. The following services are available at HSCS Counseling & Guidance department:
- Guidance Curriculum will provide guidance content in a systematic way to all students in Kindergarten through eighth grade. The purpose is to bring awareness, skill development and application of the skills needed in everyday life. We use the “Growing in Love” curriculum, a National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) approved comprehensive guidance program for elementary and middle school students and the Virtues in Practice– https://www.nashvilledominican.org/apostolate/evangelization-and-catechesis/virtues-in-practice/ .
- Responsive Services will address the immediate concerns of students daily. Programs available include individual and small group counseling, crisis intervention, consultation, and collaboration for students, parents and staff. Referrals to other agencies and resources also available and provided.
- Individual Planning will assist students in monitoring and understanding their own development; help students with academic planning, goal-setting and self-awareness.
- System Support will include program and staff support activities and services through needs assessment and consultation from administration, teachers, parents and students.
Classroom and School-wide Guidance
All students receive guidance lessons in character formation in which the counselor in collaboration with the classroom teachers teaches students skills in:
- Personal & Social — self-esteem, confidence, safe environment, bully prevention, conflict resolution, anxiety/worries, drug and violence prevention, Red Ribbon Week, friendship, feelings, tolerance & acceptance
- Spiritual — virtue development, prayers, liturgy/mass, sacraments, saints, retreats
- Academic & Educational — goal-setting, time management and organizational skill building, responsible behavior
- Career & Occupational –– interest inventory, exploration of different careers and vocations, Career & Vocation day
The guidance curriculum is intended to support the objective of academic instruction and to help students develop their full personal and educational potential.
Student Referral Process
As parents and partners in educating the students at HSCS, we would like to request your assistance in referring students to our services as needed.
Students may be referred by a teacher, parent, counselor, administrator or through self-referral to participate in an individual or small group setting for concerns which may be interfering with the student’s ability to learn and concentrate on school work.
A referral form must be completed by an adult and turn in to the counselor. If weekly intervention is necessary, a parent permission form must be completed.
If you have a concern and would like to refer a student, please print and complete the referral form, and return to the Counseling department.
Individual & Small Group Topics
- New Kids on the Block — new students to Holy Spirit are matched with a buddy to assist them in their transition.
- Sunshine Club — students who are experiencing difficulty with self-confidence, making friends, communicating, problem-solving and decision-making.
- The TEAM (Together Everyone Achieves More) — students who need work on getting along better with others; developing good social skills.
- The COOL Group —students who need to learn self-control and the steps to identify and display their anger and frustration in healthy and appropriate ways.
- Banana Splits — students who are experiencing/experienced a separation, deployment or divorce in their family.
- Movin’ On — students who have experienced loss
- Successful Student —students not doing well academically due to lack of some organization, time management and other academic skills.
- SAM (Stress & Anxiety Management) — students who exhibit tremendous amount of worries, fears, anxiety and stress.Emphasis is on creating a safe environment, identify triggers, and learn healthy coping mechanisms.
- Peace Place — for students who feel bullied or picked on by others, bystanders who had witnessed bullying and those who have bullied others will learn appropriate words, confident body languages and healthy and acceptable thoughts and behaviors.
